Review of Deliciously Ella Recipes

Ella is one of my biggest inspirations when it comes to cooking, plant based food, sustainability, the environment, and so much more. I have been cooking from her recipe books for the past year and just recently downloaded her app, which for a small monthly fee, provides you with a bounty of recipes, cooking tips, yoga flows and more. The only struggle I have found with Ella’s recipes is that the measurement for the ingredients is in the UK measuring system and so I have to convert everything to the US system.

I decided to try some recipes purposefully for reviewing for this blog. I judged these recipes on a 1-5 scale on: ease of cooking (1 being easy, 5 being hard), taste (5 being the best), and then a yes or no for would I make again.

Simple Scones

Ease of Cooking: 1

Taste: 4.5

Would I Make Again: Yes

Notes: These scones came together in no time. All the ingredients that go into these are pantry staples, so you can make these without the fuss of going out to get ingredients. I love the hint of nutmeg in these. They are a subtly sweet treat, perfect with tea or coffee.

Spinach and Artichoke dip

Ease of Cooking: 1

Taste: 5

Would I Make Again: Yes

Notes: I’m all about the dips; guacamole, hummus, salsa, you name it. When I came across this dip on the app I was intrigued; I haven’t really ever had warm dips before. I am SO glad I tried this (and so is my family who devoured it all immediately). Pro tip: dip roasted sweet potatoes in it for the ultimate combo!

PB chocolate cupcakes

Ease of Cooking: 1

Taste: 4

Would I Make Again: Yes (but not the frosting)

Notes: I really enjoyed the texture and flavor of the cake part of these cupcakes- not to mention how easy they were to make! However, I didn’t love the frosting, it was a bit too sweet for me the recipe made a lot more frosting than needed for the amount of cupcakes, so I had a left over bowl of frosting that I didn’t know what to do with. But overall, I have remade the cake part multiple times and it’s a truly delicious light and spongy cake, perfect with tea.

Super green pasta

Ease of Cooking: 1

Taste: 4.5

Would I Make Again: Yes

Notes: Let me just say- this is a great and delicious way to get your greens in. The roasted garlic in the sauce just took it to a whole new level. And the addition of the roasted veg added a great texture and variety to every bite. The only thing I would say was that the sauce was very thin and runny, so I might add a few tablespoons of white beans to the blend next time to make it a little thicker. But I definitely recommend this recipe!

Gingerbread loaf

Ease of Cooking: 2

Taste: 4.5

Would I Make Again: Yes

Notes: This was a HIT in my house. First of all, it made the house smell absolutely amazing. Second, it was such a fluffy, delicious and not overly sweet loaf that I just keep eating slice after slice! The only thing that scared me while cooking it was the amount of milk it called for. Adding 2.5 cups of milk made the batter incredibly liquidy and I thought I had done something wrong.. but alas, I never should have doubted Ella, because the loaf came out perfect. I did have to bake it for an additional 10 minutes from what the recipe called for, but all ovens vary- just keep an eye on yours and stick a toothpick in every so often. Also, big tip, after you take it out of the oven, let it cool completely IN the tin so the inside can set and finish cooking!

Debrief: As you can see from my overall ratings of Ella’s recipe’s, I absolutely love everything. Ella has been one of my idols for a long time. I truly connect with what her brand represents and I love everything she stands for. If you haven’t already, grab yourself one of her cookbooks or download her app (which is an absolute treasure) and begin creating in the kitchen!
